Dec 13, 2018 | Ei Newsletters

Elemental Impact Logo
Welcome to the Ei Newsletter

Completions and new beginnings were Ei’s recent theme! With the announcement of a new primary focus, Ei shifted directions and Recycling Refinement evolved into Mission Accomplished!

In addition, there was a “change of the guard” in Sustainable Food Court Initiative leadership. Read the below newsletter to learn how Ei lives the tagline: Sustainability in ACTION! Follow the Ei Blogs, The IMPACT and Zero Waste in ACTION, to keep current on project status and tales from the journey.

Soil Health, a new Ei Platform

In 2017 Ei shifted gears within the spiral of humanity’s environmental impact. Ei evolved from a focus on Recycling Refinement and food waste collection for compost to Soil Health, regenerating the foundation of life. Soil Health brings Ei back to core roots on many levels. Early steps within the Soil Health journey began with the 2009 Zero Waste Zones (ZWZ) launch; the ZWZ were the nation’s forerunner in the collection of commercial food waste for compost.

Soil Health brings a vibrancy to Ei’s important work along with renewed and new industry relationships. The spiral of humanity’s environmental impact is perpetual. Ei is honored to bring past expertise to new light within Soil Health programs under development.

The ZWA Blog article, Soil Health: regenerating the foundation of life, introduces Ei’s new platform and intertwines Ei history as a powerful foundation for Soil Health.

Ei Farm Tours

Ei News Photo Ei Farm Tours join The Macro Cost of Micro Contamination and Carbon Sequestration as Soil Health platform focus areas. In early 2017 Ei embarked on a series of farm tours supporting the July Soil Health platform announcement.

The ZWA Blog article, The Power of Tours, chronicles Ei’s rich industry tours history. Kennesaw State University Hickory Grove Farm tours are the main article feature.

Sustainable Soils Luncheon

Ei News PhotoOn August 22 Laura Turner Seydel hosted a Sustainable Soils luncheon at the EcoManor, her LEED Certified home. An impressive cross section of industry professionals from the USDA Forest Service, The Conservation Fund, U.S. Composting Council, Turner Foundation, Captain Planet Foundation, Park Pride, Emory University, ERTH Products, Ei, Growing a Greener World, and Kellogg Garden Organics attended the empowering luncheon.

The luncheon was in honor of industry icon Kathy Kellogg Johnson’s Atlanta visit. When Ei introduced Kathy and Laura in the spring, a profound friendship blossomed. The luncheon is featured on the Ei Connects website page.Photo: Kathy Kellogg Johnson & Joe Lamp’l of Growing a Greener World.

Sustainable Food Court Initiative
Changing of the Guard

Ei News Photo Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) Director of Sustainability Tim Trefzer joins the Ei Leadership Team as the new Sustainable Food Court Initiative (SFCI) Chair.

Founding SFCI Co-Chairs Scott Seydel and Doug Kunnemann of NatureWorks lead the SFCI through grand successes within the Recycling Refinement and Post-Consumer Food Waste focus areas. With Ei’s shift to a Soil Health focus, Scott and Doug pass the SFCI leadership baton to Tim with strong accolades.

The ZWA Blog article, Changing of the Guard: Welcome Tim Trefzer to the Ei Leadership Team!, gives a brief SFCI history, chronicles Tim’s impressive achievements, and includes Scott and Doug’s accolades.

SFCI – GWCCA

Ei News Photo With the November 2017 decommissioning of the Georgia Dome, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) stepped forward as the SFCI Event Venue Pilot. The Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), the fourth-largest convention center in the nation and the world’s largest LEED Certified convention center, is within the GWCCA umbrella. In addition to the GWCC, the GWCCA manages Olympic Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta and the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center.

The SFCI – Georgia Dome page showcases the accomplishments during its 2012 – 2016 tenure as the SFCI Event Venue Pilot.

The ZWA Blog article, What Can Be Done!, announces the SFCI – GWCCA along with a list of GWCCA sustainability accomplishments and challenges facing event venues.

ZWA Blog tops 350,000 pageviews!

Ei News Photo The Ei Blogs – The IMPACT and Zero Waste in ACTION – continue to serve as valuable industry resources with a strong global readership.

On July 17, the ZWA Blog topped the coveted 350,000 pageviews milestone!

The IMPACT Blog article, Ei: Respected Journalism, chronicles Ei’s segue from a valuable media and industry resource into respected environmental journalism.

USGBC Atlanta Zero Waste Visit

Ei News Photo In late July, Ei hosted U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Global Zero Waste Director Stephanie Barger on a whirlwind Atlanta zero waste-focused visit. For three days, Stephanie met with Atlanta’s sustainability leadership to educate on the USGBC Zero Waste Certification and their commitment to building a zero waste economy.

Intertwined within Stephanie’s two-hour zero waste presentation at The Epsten Group, Ei Founder Holly Elmore educated on Recycling Refinement, moving beyond landfill diversion; the SFCI Pilots served as prominent examples of zero waste program success. It was empowering to showcase Atlanta’s pioneers and leadership status. Holly’s PPT presentation is available for download on the Ei Speaking Engagements page.

The ZWA Blog article, Building a Zero Waste Economy, one step, one city at a time, is an overview of the important visit.
